Maintenance

Ralco recommends checking tyre pressure at least once every fortnight in the cold weather (a tyre that has not been used for at least 2 hours or has run for less than 3Km at a reduced speed).
  • Checking inflation pressure of the tyre after a long use is best avoided. If not, follow OE recommendations or add 4 PSI to the OE recommended cold pressure
  • Always use the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer
  • Ralco recommends use of dry air (clear of moisture, dust, etc), however the use of nitrogen as a substitute does not have any negative impact on performance of the tyre
  • After checking the tyre pressures, do not forget the replace the valve cap, which in addition to protecting valve core against dust, also acts as a secondary air seal.

Causes:

Mismatch or improper inflation pressure of the front and rear tyres can have an effect on the handling of a vehicle.

Troubleshooting:

Check the pressure of the tyres with calibrated gauge and if any irregularity is observed in the inflation pressure, adjust the pressure to the OE recommended pressure.

Tyre Pressure

  • Every vehicle comes with an OE pressure recommendation sticker and it should be respected
  • One can find pressure sticker at either of these locations on a bike: near chain sprocket (Stay) or on the fuel tank
  • Generally OE recommends two different recommendations for inflation pressure:
    • Rider (without pillion)
    • Rider + pillion
  • One must adjust the pressure according to use
  • The tyre and the wheel must be thoroughly inspected by the fitter (inside & outside)
  • Specifications provided by motorcycle and tyre manufacturer must be complied with
  • The rim must be clean and in good conditions (free of rust)
  • Tyre and the wheel type match. Never fit Tubeless tyre on a Tube-type wheel
  • The valve should be replaced during the changing of tyres
  • With a suitable lubricant, lubricate all the inner parts of the rim and also the bead of the tyre, on both sides
  • Observe the rolling direction, which is indicated by an arrow on the sidewall
  • Using suitable levers perform bead to rim mounting, and finishing at the location just ahead of the valve
  • Without interruption, Inflate until the bead are well seated on the rim & inflate without the core.Continue inflation up till 3.5 bar (51 psi) for a proper bead seating
  • Replace the valve core, inflate to the recommended pressure and screw the valve cap

Notice

  • For safety reasons, it is recommended to use a new inner tube
  • In the case of spoke wheels, to avoid spokes from damaging the inner tube make sure the rim band is installed
  • Slightly inflate the tube before inserting it into the tyre envelope

DO

Always use vegetable based lubricant for bead lubrication, Always use new valve (in case of Tubeless tyres) and new tubes (in case of Tube-Type tyres) with a new tyre.

DON'T

Do not mount tyre with lubricants which contain petroleum based products. Do not mount tyre manually with improper tools.

  • The tyre and the wheel must be thoroughly inspected by the fitter (inside & outside)
  • Specifications provided by motorcycle and tyre manufacturer must be complied with
  • The rim must be clean and in good conditions (free of rust)

DO

Maintain the fitment tools in good working order only use clean vegetable based lubricants.

DON'T

  • Do not de-mount a tyre without lubrication.
  • Do not damage the bead by using poorly maintained tools & other methods.

Improper mounting

Causes

Improper mounting of a tyre-wheel assembly can causes the assembly to have radial run-out (out of round) which can then result into vibration issues.

Troubleshooting

It’s very important to follow the proper mounting procedure and make sure the beads of the tyre are properly seated with the help of a centering guide

Deformed or Damaged rim

Causes

Deformed/damaged rim can affect the roundness of a tyre wheel assembly to a great extent which a can then result into various handling issues mainly vibration

Troubleshooting

Make sure the rim is in good condition without any damage/bending

The lack of balanced wheel assembly

Causes

The effect of imbalance is vibrations generally at higher speeds due to residual forces from unbalanced mass

Troubleshooting

If a customer normally experiences vibrations at higher speeds, the lack of balance could be an issue. So the wheel assembly should be properly balanced.

Uneven Wear

Causes

Uneven wear of the front and rear tyres can causes handling issue and to some extent vibrations as well

Troubleshooting

Check the tyre for any uneven wear of the front and rear tyres, if observed causes of the uneven wear must be identified and corrected. Then replace the tyre(s) having uneven wear or extensive wear.

Inappropriate TyreSizes

Causes

Incorrect tyres sizes can cause serious handling issues

Troubleshooting

Make sure the tyre size(s) are as per the OE or tyre manufacturer recommendations

Mixing Radial and Bias Tyres

Causes

Mixing of Radial and Bias tyres on the front and rear positions

Troubleshooting

Make sure that the type of tyres used is the same on both front and rear positions

Tyre marked should be mounted on the front if it says “front wheel” and tyres marked “rear wheel” on rear positions

Notice

Do not mount front tyre on rear axle or vice-versa

  • The front tyre is primarily designed to perform the function of steering the vehicle and to carry lesser load as compared to the rear tyre
  • The rear tyre is primarily designed to transfer the torque from the engine to move the bike forward and to carry higher load as compared to the front tyre . So interchanging the front and rear tyre can have adverse effect on tyre and bike performance.

Example

Hero splendor’s Front Tyre: 2.75-17 42P and Rear Tyre: 2.75-17 48P. fronttyre is fitted on rear position of a bike then the tyre would not be able to match the OE load specifications and can fail due to excess load on the tyre.

Tube-Type Tyres

  • The Tube is designed to retain air in a Tube- Type tyre. The Inner liner is not designed for this function
  • The Inner liner is designed to protect the casing plies from the tube abrasion
  • The TT wheel rims in most cases do not have a hump design because, the inflated tube ensures bead seating.

TubeLess Tyres

  • Air retention is the sole purpose of the Inner liner
  • Bead is designed to air-lock the tyre-rim assembly and grasping the tyre on to the rim
  • When a tyre is externally penetrated by an object , the inner liner grips the object to prevent the loss of pressure

Notice

Never interchange a tubeless tyre with a tube-type tyre, and vice-versa because, components of each type of tyre are designed to function differently from each other.

Current regulations stipulate that a date of manufacture should be engraved on the sidewall of the tyre.

This date consists of a series of 4 digits engraved on the sidewall

  • The first two digits indicate the week of manufacture
  • The last two digits indicate the year of manufacturer

E.g 2515=25th Week of 2015

Sometimes the manufacturing data is engraved using the Month and Year format

E.g May 11=May month of 2015
